The natural dye, henna or mehndi, has been around since the beginning of time. Henna and mehndi have been used by women of Arab and Indian countries to decorate their hands, feet, and torso with intricate and elaborate designs for celebrations and weddings. As with any product that will be applied to the skin, there is always a possibility of an allergic reaction. Therefore, it is recommended to keep your first few henna tattoos reasonably simple; so if there is an allergy to the henna paste, it will be localized to a small area of the body.

Henna powder (20g)
Glass or plastic bowl
Application cone or bottle
Mix the henna powder with a 1/4 cup lemon juice, and vigorously mix until there are no lumps present. Continue stirring until the paste becomes the consistency of mashed potatoes.
Add 1.5 teaspoons of sugar to mix, as this will aid henna paste adhering to the skin. It will also make the mixture smooth and creamy, keep stirring until the smooth and silky texture is obtained.
The paste needs to be covered with plastic wrap and kept in a warm place for about 24 hours so that the dye can be drawn out, and the color will deepen. After 24 hours of resting, it is ready to be applied to the skin.
If you have decided to go ahead and do the design yourself, there are stencils one can use so to obtain a perfect outline, thus making it easier to apply the mehndi tattoo.
